NAMI WV is an
affiliate of NAMI
Arizona, National
Alliance on Mental
Illness Arizona
Since its first meeting in 1979, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill has become the nation's leading grassroots,
self-help and family advocacy organization solely dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental
illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder.

NAMI has built its organization on four cornerstones: support, education, advocacy and research.  With more than
280,000 members and over 1200 state and local affiliates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico,
American Samoa and Canada, NAMI's members work to bring hope and progress to thousands of people with
severe mental illnesses.

NAMI Arizona was founded in 1983.  The state office is located at 2210 N. 7th St., Phoenix and contains a library
of current information.

There are now ten affiliates in the state: Phoenix, East Valley, West Valley, Southeast Valley, Southern Arizona,
Southeastern Arizona, Flagstaff, Yavapai County, Sedona and Yuma with over 1000 members.

The first meeting of our affiliate, then known as SCAMI (Sun Cities Alliance for the Mentally Ill) was held in
November, 1990 with six members.  We now encompass the entire West Valley.

Today, we have over 130 memberships and are still growing.  Our affiliate has taken an active role in support and
education for those with mental illnesses, their families and friends in the West Valley.
